Research Updates in Kidney and Urologic Health
New Publications From NKUDIC
The National Kidney and Urologic Diseases Information Clearinghouse (NKUDIC) is pleased to announce two new easy-to-read booklets on urologic problems and two additions to the series on medical tests for kidney and urologic conditions.
Written in plain language, this new booklet covers the causes, symptoms, and treatments for urinary tract infection (UTI). The booklet also informs people about when to see a physician for suspected UTI, what will happen during a visit to the doctor, and how to prevent recurrences. Illustrations and diagrams help clarify medical concepts. The booklet concludes with a glossary of terms and resources for additional help.
This new easy-to-read booklet covers the two most common prostate problems—prostatitis and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Prostate cancer is discussed briefly as well. The booklet explains the symptoms and possible consequences of these diseases. Illustrations and diagrams help clarify the diagnostic tests, treatment options, and possible side effects. The booklet includes a glossary and concludes with a section on additional resources, including sources of cancer information.
This new patient fact sheet covers the diagnostic procedures used to evaluate incontinence and voiding difficulties. It explains the reasons for the tests, the preparations involved, and the procedures themselves, as well as what to expect afterward and how to interpret the results. The tests discussed include uroflowmetry, cystometry, electromyography, pressure flow studies, video urodynamics, and leak point pressure.
Men make more than 2.5 million doctor visits a year for the diagnosis and treatment of BPH. This new fact sheet provides detailed information about the diagnostic procedures used to evaluate symptoms of prostatitis and prostate enlargement. It explains the reasons for the tests, the preparations involved, and the procedures themselves, as well as what to expect afterward and how to interpret the results. The tests discussed include the digital rectal exam, prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, transrectal ultrasound, pressure flow studies, and imaging techniques.
Single copies of each publication are available free of charge; booklets are available in packages of 25 for $10; fact sheets are available in packages of 25 for $5. To order these materials, use the online catalog or call NKUDIC at 1–800–891–5390.
Since NIDDK's health information materials are a public service and are not copyrighted, health care professionals are encouraged to duplicate these publications as handouts for their patients or as an insert for office or association newsletters.
