Research Updates in Kidney and Urologic Health

New Publications From NKUDIC

The National Kidney and Urologic Diseases Information Clearinghouse (NKUDIC) is pleased to announce two new publications to help patients prepare for medical tests.

Cystoscopy and Ureteroscopy

When a patient has a urinary problem, the doctor may use a cystoscope to see the inside of the bladder and urethra. When the instrument is used to view the ureters, it is called a ureteroscope. The new Cystoscopy and Ureteroscopy fact sheet covers preparation for the exam, the procedure itself, and what a patient can expect afterward. The fact sheet also lists the different urinary problems that may lead a doctor to recommend a cystoscopic or ureteroscopic examination.

Cystoscopy and Kidney Biopsy factsheets

Kidney Biopsy

A kidney biopsy is a diagnostic test that involves collecting small pieces of kidney tissue. The new fact sheet Kidney Biopsy begins with an explanation of why a kidney biopsy might be needed and describes the steps a patient will take to prepare for the test. Information on recovery, potential complications, and results are included as well.

A single copy of each publication is available free of charge, and packages of 25 are $5. To order these materials, use the online catalog or call NKUDIC at 1–800–891–5390. The publications are also available at http://kidney.niddk.nih.gov/kudiseases/a-z.asp on the Internet.

Since NIDDK's health information materials are a public service and are not copyrighted, health care professionals are encouraged to duplicate the publications as handouts for their patients or as an insert for office or association newsletters.
